Exercise 13 Change the arrangement of your blog

Selecting a set template I changed the arrangement of my blog to show the archives on the left hand side instead of the right and the followers to appear on the left. The old layout is posted below:

Exercise 12 Changing the colour of your blog

Using the set templates I changed the main colours of my blog from black to red. The old layout is posted below.

Exercise 11 Recommendation

Ultimo Library could begin utilizing the following 2.0 tools:

Blogs. They can be used to post about a range of subjects concerning the library for example Local Studies. This will be useful to many users as Ultimo is rich in history which community may be unaware of. Mosman Library has used this for their blog here: http://refdesk.mosmanlibraryblogs.com/category/Local-History/

For 2.0 tools involving youth, Ultimo library could implement a homework help website. This encourages participation through live chat, applications and social networking. This encourages the completion of school work and allows youth to become more savvy in the way they use the web. New York Public Library has implemented this service here: http://homeworknycbeta.org/2011/03/for-students/

For Adult fiction, Ultimo could implement a website that recommends and reviews texts. This will encourage borrowing within the library. Chicago Public Library use this tool here: http://www.chipublib.org/cplbooksmovies/cplblog/index.php

Social Networking - users that subscribe to the library's feed can stay up to date on a range general information including events and friends 'checking in'. This encourages involvement and activity. Surry Hills Library have their details listed on facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Surry-Hills-Library/111418548919636?sk=info

Exercise 10 2.0 Technologies, Ultimo Library

Ultimo Library uses little web 2.0 technologies. They are a part the City of Sydney Libraries who all use similar style city council websites, that are very basic and give general information. The services they do offer are mainly email and to notify clients when books have arrived and are overdue. The lack of web 2.0. technologies is understandable as the library is: a) very small compared to its partner branches in Sydney b) lacks substantial I.C.T. facilities and c) own a small collection compared to other City of Sydney branches, therefore not needing constant updating. However, using the City of Sydney catalogue members can browse staff picks and write their own reviews on books and items they have read and/or borrowed.

Exercise 9 Community Profiles

Ultimo Library:

Ultimo Library is located on 30 William Henry Street on top of the local community centre. The library offers a range of books, CDs, DVDs and magazines for loan. Daily newspapers in English and Chinese are also available. Because of its close location to Chinatown there is a large Chinese population Ultimo library caters to. Being part of the City of Sydney link, members of Ultimo library are able to have books inter-loaned meaning access to a wider collection. They also provide public computer access and free Wi-fi.

More details on membership and borrowing can be found here.

Other libraries in the Ultimo Area include: Jessie Street National Women's library, the Powerhouse Musuem library, UTS library, TAFE - Ultimo library and the Pyrmont link.

Exercise 8 - CURRENT AWARENESS POST

For this exercise I watched 'Automated Book Delivery System and Virtual Browse'. I think it is a great idea and books will last longer if they aren't stored on traditional shelves. However, implementing them will cost a lot of money. It also means jobs would be lost within the library system.

Exercise 7 Podcasts

Studio Stories 2 is a podcast from the State Library of New South Wales where artists Wendy Sharpe and Angus Nivison talk about their studios and daily life.

Exercise 6 Social Bookmarking

Book reviews should not be limited to those who are trying to sell and/or purchase books. Libraries should begin including reviews within their library catalogues as they will promote borrowing, especially if they are small libraries dealing with a decline in visitors. A client will be less likely to borrow a book if they don't know about its content. Choosing who writes the review or where it comes from will be important because it would have to be written well.

The University of Sydney Library does not include book reviews in their catalogue, but because it is an academic library they do not suffer so much with the issue of loosing clientele.

Investigative Exercise 5 Social Networking

It is important for libraries to begin using social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter as they are easily becoming the best way for people to communicate. Social networking used to promote business is successful because it removes the gap between a client and a worker making establishments more relatable and easier to approach. It is also a great way to keep those interested with news and events as it happens rather than waiting on a newsletter. And because threads are included with every post, it allows discussion. This discussion can really clue a library into what it is their clientele are enjoying or not.

This video explains what a library is used for and generally promotes library use to children.

Investigative Exercise 1 Blogs

For Exercise 1: I looked at the John Oxley Library blog. The post that struck my attention most was 'John Oxley Library embraces 'Punk' music'. I like here that the library has begun this collection because the scene or community in which these bands existed would have been very underground and not particularly understood or enjoyed by a wider community. I think it's important to preserve this culture and have access to it.

I have been collecting records for a couple of years now because I like the physicality of them. I'm also interested in Australian punk music old and new, not so much in terms of punk sounds but in terms of punk attitudes.

Great post.
